Position Summary |
The Kyle Lab Manager, in addition to carrying out experimental procedures, will be in charge of daily operations of the lab. This includes the maintenance of tissue culture facilities, ordering and organization of laboratory materials, and more generally supporting a positive laboratory environment and facilitating the carrying out of experiments by laboratory personnel. Knowledge, skills, abilities needed to successfully perform work: Excellent organizational skills and familiarity with routine biochemistry and immunology procedures desired. Above all, if there is a desire to learn, one can flourish in this position. Effectively communicate both in written and spoken formats will be expected. |

The central objective of the lab is to carry out relevant research of the highest quality in the most efficient way possible and it is the overarching goal of the Lab Manager (LM) to facilitate the ability of members of the lab to achieve their experimental goals. This position involves an individual with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills to be successful. The regular duties and responsibilities of the LM will be divided into three main parts with associated time commitments stated as a percentage of the total time in lab. The LM also serves as a critical support hub for the laboratory and as such 25% of your total time will be devoted to supporting the smooth functioning of the lab itself. As part of these support duties, you will prepare assignment calendars for standard, lab shared duties. Additionally, operating as an open and available resource to help lab members navigate protocols and logistical hurdles to move their projects forward is central to this position, including managing and help maintaining the insectary |

Organizational and lab ordering duties:
The organizational structure of the lab, as agreed upon with the PI, will be carried out and enforced by the lab manager. The LM will be responsible for maintaining the various inventories of the lab which include chemicals/reagents, archived cell lines, hazardous waste management, lab safety compliance, and lab equipment. This person will also serve as a critical interface between supply/equipment vendors and the lab and will be charged with communicating new pricing and equipment issues to the principal investigator. When new equipment or deliveries arrive it will be the job of the lab manager to archive relevant manuals and warranty information and stock and store materials appropriately. Lab material ordering is also a critical aspect of this position. Maintaining a working knowledge of the current levels of lab consumables that are used on a regular basis, e.g. gloves, tubes, pipette tips etc, and having them consistently stocked is an essential aspect of this position. Additionally, the LM will be responsible for submitting special order items requested from lab members to the ordering database. These special request items however will involve PI approval before submission. The lab will have a series of rotating "chore lists" that will change each semester in order to distribute the load of lab work equitably amongst lab members and the assignment and changing of these duties will be the responsibility of the lab manager. Commonly used equipment will utilize weekly signup sheets and/or online calendars which will also be the responsibility of the LM. |
