Ensures the safety, promotion and engagement of campers during lake recreational activities. Creates a fun and engaging environment for campers by leading various activities, ensuring their safety and promoting participation in camp activities. Summer Camp Schedule: May 26, 2025 to August 07, 2025

Salary: $15.00 hourly

For returning hires additional $1.00 hourly

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

Provides safe and effective services

  • Adheres to policies related to safety and boundaries with service recipients.
  • Attends safety and abuse risk management training as assigned.
  • Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising service recipients.
  • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Provides lifeguard and camp services

  • Monitors swimmers and enforce safety rules.
  • Looks for hazards and prevents accidents.
  • Ensures campers are compliant to camp rules.
  • Advises campers on how to be safe in and around the water through Camp orientations and consistent engagement with the campers.
  • Actively monitors campers during activities, ensuring their safety and addressing behavioral issues promptly.
  • Recognizes and praises camper achievements and positive behavior to build confidence and encourage participation.
  • Monitors and maintains all equipment used for recreational activities such as kayaks, tubes, boats, lifejackets, etc.
  • Drives a Boys Town vehicle or boat as needed to complete duties of their job.
  • Maintains cleanliness in dorms, bedrooms, bathrooms, common areas, and dining halls by sweeping, mopping, wiping down surfaces, taking out trash, cleaning spills, and ensuring the overall tidiness of the camp facilities, in collaboration with other staff members;this also includes assisting with laundry duties for camp linens and towels.
  • Assists with basic food preparation tasks like setting up serving lines, portioning food, distributing food to campers in a timely and organized manner, while accommodating dietary restrictions. Lifeguards will adhere to the IA food safety guidelines and proper hygiene practices while handling food.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the Boys Town Model.
  • Knowledge of water safety.
  • Basic practices and etiquette of operating a boat.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations when using a lake.
  • Ability to communicate in an articulate, professional manner while maintaining a necessary degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to quickly make decisions sensitive and sometimes critical moments and adapt responses to situations, while maintaining procedural and regulatory integrity.
  • Ability to successfully lead youth in the completion of tasks and redirect inappropriate youth behaviors.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum of 19 years of age required.
  • Successfully pass a swimming test to be eligible for training and position required.
  • Lifeguard/CPR Certification within 10 days of transfer or hire required.
  • First Aid Certification required. (Boys Town will provide an American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR and First Aid Certification course if not already certified).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred.
  • Current Lifeguard/CPR Certification preferred.
  • Iowa or Nebraska Boat License preferred.
