Primary Purpose of Position
The Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T State University seeks a dynamic and innovative Chairperson for the Department of Economics who possesses a strong record of scholarship, teaching, and service, along with demonstrated leadership experience in higher education. The successful candidate will exhibit a strong commitment to fostering excellence in research, teaching, and service and possess a clear vision for advancing the educational, research, and community engagement efforts of the department.

This is a 12-month administrative position with a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The preferred start date is July 2025.
Reporting directly to the Dean of the Deese College, the Department Chair is expected to provide strategic and operational leadership for the department while fostering a collaborative and collegial environment. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Advancing the department's mission in research, teaching, and service.
  • Developing and executing the department's vision and strategic plan in alignment with the College and University goals.
  • Promoting student success through recruitment, retention, mentoring, and support initiatives.
  • Ensuring the quality and relevance of undergraduate programs.
  • Overseeing faculty workload assignments, recruitment, mentoring, evaluation, and development.
  • Supporting faculty research, teaching, and service activities.
  • Providing financial oversight and stewardship of departmental resources.
  • Engaging faculty in program assessment, reporting, and strategic planning efforts.
  • Leading accreditation efforts and ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
  • Representing the department to internal and external constituencies, including alumni, donors, and industry partners.


The ideal candidate will bring a distinguished record of scholarship and research, a commitment to academic excellence, and an ability to cultivate and sustain an inclusive and collaborative departmental culture. Experience with securing external funding and familiarity with accreditation processes, particularly AACSB, is highly desirable.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. Minimum Requirements
Earned doctorate in Economics or closely related field. A minimum of six years of demonstrated excellence in teaching.

The Chairperson should be an open and effective communicator, with an ability to build cooperation and consensus. The candidate's academic credentials should provide evidence of an ability to work effectively and collaboratively with the faculty and administration of the College and University, and other constituent groups and partners both within and outside the University.

The Chairperson must have a continuous commitment to student success, faculty scholarship and research.
