Winston-Salem State University is seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial Senior Director of Development to lead and grow our Major Gifts Program. This is a unique opportunity for a strategic, results-driven professional to make a lasting impact by cultivating key donor relationships, leading a team of Gift Officers, and building systems that enhance donor engagement.
As Senior Director, you will play a pivotal role in developing and expanding WSSU's donor pipeline, advancing our fundraising goals, and directly contributing to the university's mission of transforming lives through education. You'll lead with creativity and resourcefulness while working closely with university leadership to implement innovative strategies that fuel our long-term philanthropic success.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and expand the Major Gifts Program
  • Develop systems and strategies to grow the donor pipeline
  • Mentor and manage a team of Gift Officers
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors
  • Collaborate with university leadership to align fundraising efforts with institutional priorities

Requirements and Preferences


Position required to work during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies
Normal Work Schedule
8-5pm Monday thru Friday with occasional evenings and weekends.
Department Required Skills
Bachelor's degree required.
At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in major gift fundraising, gift planning or a field providing comparable knowledge of tax law and financial and estate planning principles.

Demonstrated ability to manage successful personal solicitations for major gift fundraising.

Demonstrated ability to manage, train, and lead administrative support professionals and development professionals. Ability and willingness to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed is required.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Advanced degree preferred with at least 6 years of progress experience within the industry. Prior fundraising experience, preferably in higher education or non-profit management. Ability to interact successfully with a wide range of individuals and positions. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage many projects simultaneously. Excellent organizational, interpersonal skills and strong written and verbal communication skills. Skilled at collaborating with various stakeholders. Attention to detail. Ability and willingness to travel and to work evenings and weekends, as needed. Appreciation for and support of the mission, tradition, and culture of the University.
