About the Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work at MSU Denver is a growing academic unit consisting of undergraduate and graduate education and includes the Master of Social Work Program, Bachelor of Science in Social Work Program, grants and contract services, the Office of Field Education, and the Office of Social Work Student Services, Operations and Finance (OSWSS-OF). The mission of MSU Denver's Department of Social Work is to prepare social workers to engage in skillful, ethical, justice-oriented, and effective practice in their communities.

We accomplish this by:

  • Educating and training students to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, including those who are members of historically excluded populations.
  • Building community centered and strategic partnerships with organizations, co-creating relationship-centered learning and working environments to foster growth and collaboration.
  • Utilizing the NASW Code of Ethics to inform teaching and practice, while adapting to changes in the field and world, drawing from a vast knowledge base informed by multiple perspectives.

Position Summary

The Finance and Outreach Assistant in the Department of Social Work at Metropolitan State University of Denver is a member of the Office of Student Services, Operations & Finance (OSWSS-OF) team and works directly with the Chair of the Social Work Department, as well as the Director of the Office of Field Education, and the Director of Student Services, Operations & Finance. The Finance and Outreach Assistant reports directly to the Assistant Director of Outreach, Admissions, and Communications, and works in direct support of the Finance and Hiring Manager.

Responsibilities

Alumni & External Engagement - 30%

  • Work together with the Director of OSWSS-OF and the Assistant Director of Outreach, Admissions, and Communications to design alumni engagement opportunities that enhance student recruitment and amplify the impact of social workers.
  • Work with the Director of OSWSS-OF to understand, analyze, and communicate student and alumni data.
  • Support the Department Chair and Assessment Committee Coordinator with distribution and data collection of the Exit and Alumni surveys.
  • Build strong working relationships with the MSU Denver Alumni Assocation to foster communication and engagement with MSU Denver Social Work alums.
  • Collaborate with the Outreach & Events Coordinator to identify alumni to participate in relevant events and promote events within their networks.
  • Work with the Outreach & Events Coordinator to identify and secure sponsorships for Social Work department initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Field Education to foster solid working relationships with community partners including event and communications assistance.
  • Maintain a robust understanding of the social work field, workforce, and career opportunities.
  • Promote accomplishments of the Social Work department at MSU Denver and identify new opportunities for external partnerships and funding.

Student Services Finance & Operations Support - 25%

  • Maintain working relationships with the Office of Financial Aid and serve as a resource regarding financial aid policies and procedures for the Social Work department.
  • Facilitate the student travel program and student research award program including setting guidelines for the program, ensuring students are aware of the opportunity, processing requests, processing review and approvals with appropriate leadership, and ensuring proper documentation of expenditures.
  • Request and assess MSW program student data to determine need-based scholarship disbursements and facilitate process with financial aid.
  • Work with Accounts Payable to facilitate Social Work Emergency fund payments, as requested by the OSWSS review committee.
  • Assist students with financial money management, scholarship, and other funding support.
  • Maintain detailed reporting of students receiving financial support to assess student outcomes and impact.
  • Maintain the accounting, budgeting, and necessary reporting of the funds this position manages.

Faculty & Staff Financial Support - 25%

  • Be well-versed in university accounting, spending, and travel policies and procedures set forth by MSU Denver, the State of Colorado, and external funding sources.
  • Ensure faculty, staff, and students traveling on behalf of the Social Work department adhere to policies regarding travel authorizations, documentation, and expenses tracking.
  • Ensure faculty and staff are aware of their professional development and/or scholarly funds, and that funds are spent responsibly and adhere to proper procedures.
  • Facilitate faculty and staff spending and travel related to professional development and scholarly funds.
  • Provide purchasing support for faculty and staff as needed.
  • Maintain the accounting, budget, and necessary reporting of the faculty and staff funds this position manages.

Finance and Hiring Manager Support - 15%

  • Provide assistance to the Finance and Hiring Manager to facilitate administrative tasks.
  • Work closely with the Finance and Hiring Manager to maintain responsible accounting and budgeting.
  • Maintain a shared understanding of payroll processes and payroll allocations to ensure proper accounting.

Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

  • Skill to communicate effectively with a wide variety of constituents, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail
  • Experience and sensitivity to the educational needs of a diverse urban population including first generation college students and historically under-served populations

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in an administrative support setting (note that two years of experience equals one year of higher education).
  • Data management and/or record keeping experience
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Excel, including formulas

  • Experience working in student financial aid or in alumni relations
  • Direct experience building communication plans
  • Experience in accounting or budgeting
  • Experience working in a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated experience with data management

Schedule Information

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Exempt
  • Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Evenings and Weekend Work: Occasionally as needed
  • Schedule: Hybrid schedule requiring in person work with the flexibility of some remote work opportunities (subject to supervisor approval)
  • Travel: Rarely

Salary for Announcement

Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The full salary range for this position is $41,200 - 61,800. The anticipated hiring range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $45,000 - $50,000.

This position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
