Summary of Job Duties:A Research Assistant position is available in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The laboratory focuses on understanding the abuse liability and potential therapeutic uses of novel psychoactive substances using behavioral models in rodents. The research assistant will contribute to extramurally-funded research. The main duty will be to assist with lab animal research specifically in conducting behavioral studies in mice and rats. The research assistant will handle rodent subjects, administer injections, conduct daily behavioral sessions, collect and analyze data, and maintain the cleanliness and good working order of all laboratory equipment. Research includes models of drug abuse, learning and memory, sustained attention, thermoregulation, and autism spectrum disorder, and the individual may perform or assist in survival surgery on animals. Additional duties may include tissue collection (blood and brain), computer programming, making graphs and figures, mechanical and electronic maintenance of experimental equipment, or other duties as needed. Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in science or related field plus three (3) years of research experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to use Windows-based computer programs.

  • Lab Animal experience preferred.

  • Laboratory rodent handling and restraint, injection techniques preferred.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Performs research experiments including lab animal maintenance, record keeping, behavioral studies, surgical procedures, tissue collection and analysis. Must be experienced in DLAM work and procedures.

  • Maintains lab equipment for monitoring small animals.

  • Maintains and orders lab supplies and materials.

  • Works with and instructs other lab staff and students in proper procedures and following approved protocols.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
