The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Research Staff Assistant will be assisting with deep sea sample preparation and analysis including processing on lab testing devices and instruments. This role will help produce data reflecting the results of physical properties and geochemical analyses of sediment core samples. Additional responsibilities will include conducting sediment analysis using standard lab techniques, process resulting data on computer and lab oversight and maintenance of all minor equipment and expendable supplies.

Responsibilities



  • Process deep sea samples and/or prepared samples for research, including washing samples, using various scientific instruments such as: MST core logger, sedigraph, coulometer (bulk carbonate analyses), XRD, core splitter, XRF core logger, microscopes, and other laboratory instruments as required. Produce data reflecting the results of physical property and geochemical analyses of sediment core samples.
  • Assist Repository Curator with sampling sediment cores. For new cores entering Repository, sample where appropriate including splitting/photographing/logging cores.
  • Be responsible for maintenance and upkeep of lab supplies and minor equipment.
  • Contribute to the Repository social media stream and public education/outreach efforts in the Repository.
  • Assist Curator Anest with data management tasks including submitting data sets to data repositories.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelors Degree and some lab experience required.
  • College courses in science, math, or physics preferred.
  • Technical experience required and capability with electronic equipment with computer interface, also preferred.
  • Good written and verbal English skills required.
  • Must be detail oriented and physically able to carry cores weighing +50 lbs.
